After winning five of their final six games of the 2016-17 NBA season, the Los Angeles Lakers finished with the third-worst record in the league and had a 46.9 percent chance of keeping their top-three protected draft pick. For the third consecutive year, the storied franchise landed the second overall pick in the 2017 NBA Draft.

With the Boston Celtics expected to select Markelle Fultz with the first overall pick, the Lakers will have a few options with Lonzo Ball, De’Aaron Fox, and Josh Jackson. According to Jonathan Givony of Draft Express, Ball is considered the ‘heavy’ favorite out of the group, but the Lakers will ‘take a long hard look’ at Fox:

While Ball has been constantly linked with the Lakers during his one year in college, some teams are beginning to rank Fox ahead of him. In the Sweet 16, Fox outplayed Ball as Kentucky defeated UCLA with President of Basketball Operations Magic Johnson and general manager Rob Pelinka in attendance.

For the Lakers, keeping this year’s lottery pick provides clarity moving forward. With the opportunity to add another top prospect to their young core, the Lakers will not need to surrender their 2019 first round pick to the Orlando Magic as a result of the 2012 Dwight Howard trade. Instead, they will only have to give up their 2017 and 2018 second round picks.

Ball averaged 14.6 points, 6.0 rebounds, and 7.6 assists in his lone season at UCLA.
